The new appointments to the House of Lords have rightly been given a kicking from the newspapers.

With a few notable exceptions, like Doreen Lawrence, it was British politics at its worst, with the party leaders handing peerages to the usual suspects of donors and cronies.

It makes the House of Lords the second largest unelected chamber in the world - after the National People's Congress of China.

But with Cameron, Clegg and Miliband all at it, things aren't going to change soon.
