Explaining his decision to quit as an MP today, David Cameron said it was the “right thing to do” - which has long been his catchphrase.

The former prime minister said:

“In a way, there’s a link to the decision to resign as PM. The country made a decision, a decision I advised against, but nonetheless the decision has been made and I want the government to successfully pursue that decision and get it right. As a result, not being a backbencher but leaving parliament is the right thing to do.”

As the video above shows, quitting parliament having said he would remain an MP is the latest in a long list of things that Cameron felt were the “right thing to do” - including expanding bombing to Syria and the drone strike against the Isis militant known as Jihadi John.
