Labour MP Jess Phillips Uses Commons Speech To List 120 Women Murdered By Men

MPs sat in silence today as Jess Phillips used a Commons debate on International Women's Day to read out the names of every woman who has been murdered in by a man in the last year.

The Labour MP told the Commons: "In 2015 a women was murdered in the UK every three days. Women murdered by men that they should have been able to trust.

"Commonly, women are murdered by partners, husbands and boyfriends. But also in some cases by their fathers their sons their brothers.

"We wish to give voice to honour the women who died. Today I stand to honour every victim and the fight to end violence against women

She added: "Here the names of the women who died since International Women's Day last year."

Her voice cracking slightly a she read out the 120 names to a silent Commons, Phillips listed the names of the women and girls, aged 13 and over, killed in the last 12 months, in cases where a man has been tried and found guilty or charged or believed by police to be the primary suspect.

"These were not all poor women," Phillips said. "These were women of every age. They were teachers, dinner ladies, doctors, dancers and daughters."

Philips added the perpetrators were "not feckless drunks, they were respected fathers City bankers, eminent lawyers".

MPs broke with convention to applaud Phillips at the end of her speech.

Writing on The Huffington Post today, Philips said she would use International Women's Day to "get across the message that we women are still being murdered and abused".

"Others will be using the time to shout loud about women's achievements, speaking of great women, courageous women, women at the top," she wrote.

I will love each story or lament for what others have that we women don't. There is one thing I think that we women have that our brothers should envy and replicate - we have each other."
