Obamas' First Kiss Marked By Plaque Outside Chicago Mall (PICTURES)

The moon landing and the Kennedy assassination are among the world changing events that have had plaques commissioned to commemorate them and remind future generations of their significance to humanity.

And in that spirit it was only a matter of time before the time and place of Barack and Michelle Obama's first kiss was given such an honour.

The plaque placed outside a strip mall in the Hyde Park neighbourhood of Chicago marks the site of the 1989 kiss on the corner of Dorchester and 53rd Streets.

The president treated the first lady to ice cream at a Baskin-Robbins in the mall, which is now a Subway restaurant. The Obamas will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary in October.

Inscribed on the plaque is a quote from the president describing the moment: "On our first date, I treated her to the finest ice cream, Baskin-Robbins had to offer, our dinner table doubling as the curb, I kissed her, and it tasted like chocolate."
