New pictures have emerged of Liberal Democrat leadership hopeful Tim Farron in a 1980s band.

The Cumbria MP told the Huffington Post UK last week that he once fronted a group "written off as a fourth rate New Order".

He refused to reveal the name of the three-piece as "you can find it on YouTube".

But a day after the feature ran, the Huffington Post was sent a picture of Mr Farron in what could be described as New Romantic finery.

However, while the clip showcases a range of band's looks, the music was not been produced by his band, as Mr Farron pointed out himself.

Despite his reticence to mention the band's name, the Liberal England blog pointed out Mr Farron has been less shy in the past - in fact he told Total Politics magazine the band was variously called Fred the Girl, and The Voyeurs.

He was 18 years old at the time of the picture, it is believed, and sporting a look - striped top, thick-rimmed hat, digital watch, umbrella - that is enjoying a revival.

Mr Farron was asked by the Huffington Post about his musical background after Norman Lamb, his rival for the Lib Dem leadership, received an endorsement from pop star Dappy.

Talking about his former band, Mr Farron, now 45, said: “I don’t think the endorsement of either of my mates will help. We were written off as a fourth rate New Order – which I’m very proud of. I’m not going to tell you (the name) because you can find it on YouTube!”

The band were together between 1987 and 1992, and played a re-union in 1995. There is even talk the unnamed trio may get back together again after Mr Farron was sent some new music by a band-mate.

He told the Huffington Post: “I did spend one night when (wife) Rose fell asleep and thought, stuff this, I’m going to have a look .... we began work on new material, shall we say.”

While a "massive" Prefab Sprout fan, Mr Farron said favourite bands of the moment includes Everything, Everything, Swim Deep and Wild Beasts.
