How To Maintain Your Weight On Holiday

The summer holiday season is upon us and many are planning to go on vacation with family and friends to experience life in another country for a couple of weeks. During the summer holidays, comfortable resorts, warm waters and white, sandy beaches will surely be enjoyed. Though, trying out delicious meals the destination has to offer and eating to your heart's content will be the most fun and exciting part of the trip.

Having said this, overindulging in food is a common occurrence for individuals on holiday, which in turn, contributes to weight gain, leaving some people upset and frustrated when they return back home.

Here are some tips you can follow to ensure that you eat healthily and maintain your weight on holiday.

1. Protein up for breakfast

Opt for high-protein food for breakfast such as Greek yoghurt and scrambled egg whites. Eating high-protein foods increases satiety, decreases hunger-stimulating hormones and may help you avoid snacking during mid-morning. However, be mindful of the fat and salt content of certain high-protein foods like sausages and bacon.

2. Plan your eating days

Some holiday resorts offer all-you-can-eat buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It can be very tempting to overeat and it is easy for gluttony to kick in. If you plan to eat all you can for dinner then you may want to eat a light lunch, or if you plan to go all the way at lunchtime then perhaps have a small food portion size for breakfast and dinner.

3. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables

Some countries are known for their exotic and seasonal fruits and vegetables. It will be a shame if you do not get the chance to experience the taste of these when on holiday. As we know, fruits and vegetables are a great source of vitamins and minerals and are beneficial to our physical health. It is recommended we eat at least 5 portions of fruits and vegetables a day. Try to include these in every meal. They are generally low in calories and consuming fruits like strawberries, melons and mangos can help to satisfy for your sweet-tooth cravings.

4. Get moving

Look for activities to do during your holiday that can help increase your physical activity level. It is recommended we do at least 150mins a week of moderate aerobic activity such as cycling or fast walking. Some holiday destinations offer bicycle tours which you and your friends can participate in to explore some beautiful landscapes and reap the benefits of being active. If you are staying at a resort, it is worth checking whether they do sports activities such as tennis, badminton and volleyball that you can partake in and/or if they have a fitness centre that you can go to and workout. Being physically active will help raise your heart rate, strengthen your bones and joints and help you maintain your weight by burning calories consumed.
