One-Third Of Jeremy Corbyn's Shadow Cabinet Nominated Andy Burnham For Leader

Andy Burnham's Supporters Dominate Jeremy Corbyn's Shadow Cabinet

Jeremy Corbyn's new Shadow Cabinet is dominated by MPs who nominated Andy Burnham in the leadership election.

Burnham's backers total 11, around one-third of the top table, while eight MPs nominated Yvette Cooper.

The break-down underlines how the new leader struggled to even get on the ballot, which was decided entirely by MPs, despite his thumping victory on Saturday.

The nominations by MPs is the only public record of their support. Some MPs who "lent" Mr Corbyn their backing so the left-winger could take part in the contest switched their preference, but their votes otherwise appeared to remain the same.

Three of Mr Corbyn's most high-profile backers from the start - fellow left-wingers John McDonnell, Jon Trickett and Diane Abbott - were given Cabinet berths. Gloria De Piero was the sole Liz Kendall supporter to accept a job offer.

Mr Corbyn today said his Cabinet was "unifying, dynamic, inclusive", and his supporters will point to how it reflects the left and right of the party.

But his negotiations were hamstrung as several senior figures who served under Ed Miliband have refused to join Corbyn's team or have not been offered jobs. Chuka Umunna, Yvette Cooper, Liz Kendall, Tristram Hunt, Caroline Flint and others have all moved to the backbenches.
