Phone Hacking: New Emails Indicate Widespread Knowledge Of Hacking At News Of The World

'Damning' Phone Hacking Email Evidence Released

A slew of new evidence in the ongoing phone hacking investigation has been released which suggests key figures at News Of The World knew the practice went beyond a "rogue reporter".

According to a memo from former legal chief Tom Crone to then editor Colin Myler there was "damning" evidence in 2008 which showed the extent of attempts a reporter at the paper made to intercept the voice mails of the Football Association’s Gordon Taylor.

It sets out "fatal" evidence about journalists who had infringed "data protection", who then remained with the paper or The Sun.

"Typical infringements are 'turning around' car registration and mobile phone numbers (illegal)," says the memo.

The new evidence was published by the Culture, Media and Sport Committee on Tuesday.

Legal advice from Michael Silverleaf QC, included in the document adds that there was "overwhelming evidence of the involvement of senior News Group Newspapers journalists in illegal enquiries".

It continued there was "a powerful case that there is (or was) a culture of illegal information access used at NGN in order to produce stories for publication".

A separate email from Crone said News of the World's former editor Myler had seen the memo and would use it as a basis for talking to James Murdoch, who was then the Chief Executive - evidence which the committee may pick up on when they interview Murdoch on November 10.
