Most people don't have a pet name for their left thumb, but as James Byrne's left thumb is actually his left toe, perhaps it's a little more understandable.

Meet... Toby. Toby the thumb - the thumb that used to be his big toe.

This unusual situation came about after Byrne, 30, a paver from Bristol, was using a chopsaw at work last December when he accidentally sliced his beloved digit clean off.

Doctors at nearby Frenchay Hospital attempted to sew his thumb back on, but the surgery failed, prompting surgeon Umraz Khan to think a little laterally to solve the problem.

Removing his big toe from his left foot and attaching it to his hand, Mr. Khan managed to solve Byrne's crisis - and after one more minor piece of surgery and a bit of time getting used to standing upright without his old big toe, Byrne should be back at work in a couple of months.

As for the thumb-toe's unusual appearance, Byrne admits he's had mixed reactions.

"My son thinks it’s great," he said. "I showed it to all of his mates and became a bit of a celebrity in the playground for a while... some think it’s really funny while others are a bit disgusted."

Byrne has also released a YouTube clip explaining just what happened to him below, so to see his thumb/toe/thumb-toe in action, click play below.
