British Airways passengers were left alarmed and wet when their plane was flooded after a pipe sprung a leak.

Electronics were damaged and blankets had to be put down on the upper passenger deck after a trolley hit a water pipe that began to leak when the Airbus A380 from Johannesburg was 90 minutes from Heathrow.

Water also began to seep from the air conditioning system and the ceiling.

Passenger Nicolas Gausserand, 39, took photos of the scene and had his iPad damaged by the water.

He told The Evening Standard: "It was a lot of water, and really scary when you are at 30,000 feet.

"My bag was totally wet and my iPad damaged but BA customer service compensated me.

"Everybody was waking up so it was just strange. I think it was worse for the people downstairs. There was no panic at all. Just a really strange atmosphere."

After landing, the plane was kept on the ground for 64 hours while it was checked over, according to aircraft incident information portal Aviation Herald.

A BA spokesperson told The Huffington Post UK: "A trolley knocked a water pipe and unfortunately it created a leak.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience caused to our customers. There was no risk to the aircraft or customers on board."
