A man has died in a crash which closed part of a busy motorway for eight hours.

The accident involving a car and a lorry caused the truck to overturn on the M6 at about 4.55am, according to West Midlands Ambulance Service.

Following the fatal collision the motorway's northbound carriageway was shut between Junction 4 for Coleshill near Birmingham and Junction 4a, only re-opening this afternoon.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find a car and a lorry that had been in a serious collision, the impact of which caused the lorry to roll over.

"The passenger of the car suffered multiple serious injuries.

"Unfortunately it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

Medics said the car's driver, in his 30s, had freed himself from the wreck and was apparently uninjured although he was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The lorry driver, thought to be in his 50s, was taken to hospital with suspected fractured ribs.

As a result of the crash, the M42 northbound exit slip road at Junction 7 was also closed.

The Central Motorway Police Group said: "The recovery operation took much longer than expected but M6 north J4 to 4A is now open again."
