Britain is set to enjoy another short blast of summer, after a mixed start to September.

Warm and bright weather is expected across England and Wales on Wednesday.

Temperatures will peak at 26C or 27C (80F) in the south east, bringing a welcome respite from wet and cloudy conditions, the Met Office said, The Press Association reports.

Temperatures could reach 23C (73F) in Newcastle, while Scotland will also enjoy temperatures in the low 20s.

The average temperature in September is 16.5C (62F) in the UK and 17.9C (64F) for England.

Nicola Maxey of the Met Office said: “Certainly for anyone in the south it’s going to feel quite muggy and humid with temperatures, even further north, reaching those low 20s.”

But a much more unsettled picture is expected this weekend, she said.

Rain and gales will hit the west and north west, while temperatures across the UK will be much cooler.

The south east will remain fairly dry and bright, “hanging on” to the summer-like weather, Maxey said.
