A former soldier has been jailed after he was caught on camera savagely kicking a cat lying injured in the road after being hit by a car.

Anthony Delaney, 30, approached the helpless black and white male cat in the road in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, and sized the animal up before he crossed himself and then booted it in the air.

CCTV footage of the incident last September in Queen's Road also captured the father-of-two launching a second follow-up kick.

Delaney and his "intimidating" friends also subjected two teenage girls who had stopped their car to help the animal to a torrent of abuse - forcing them to drive away before the RSPCA arrived, the Manchester Evening News reported.

The cat, whose owner was not found, died from his injuries.

Tameside magistrates also banned Delaney, of Mossley in Greater Manchester, from keeping animals for five years.

He had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to causing unnecessary suffering.
