The BBC Television Centre in West London has been sold to property developers Stanhope PLC for £200m.

The landmark building in White City has been home to BBC classics such as Blue Peter, Fawlty Towers and Monty Python's Flying Circus since it opened in 1960.

However staff will now be relocated to other sites including MediaCity in Salford and the new Broadcasting House in central London.

Some programmes have already moved, included Blue Peter, which is now filmed in Salford.

The main circular building, known to staff as 'the doughnut', was given Grade II listed status by English Heritage in 2009.

The BBC originally announced it wanted to sell the building in 2007, as part of a bid to cut costs.

Richard Deverell, W12 programme director, said: "Television Centre has played an extraordinary and central role in the history of the BBC, which will not be forgotten."

More details of the sale will be released when the sale is complete, the corporation confirmed.
