A medieval church, which has stood at the heart of a quiet village for over 800 years, went up in flames. A huge fire ripped through St Peter's Church in Ropley near Winchester, Hants, hours after nearby residents experienced power surges. Villages watched in horror from 8.30am today as around 80 firefighters from 12 crews tackled the grade two listed Norman church's blaze. The raging fire was seen coming out the church's roof and spread below as firefighters fought to save as much of the building as possible. (credit:Rex)
