plane wreck is illuminated by a flash of green from the Northern Lights in a scene that could almost be from another planet. The fuselage of an old and abandoned US Navy Douglas Super DC-3 provides an eerie accompaniment to the bright green and yellow lights. The empty aircraft seems to be looking out at the Aurora borealis as it lies on a snow-covered black sand beach. Everyone on board the American cargo plane, which was forced to land in 1973, survived the crash on Solheimasandur beach in Iceland. The plane was abandoned, although it is not entirely clear why it crashed, with suggested reasons including severe icing and that the plane ran out of fuel. The remains of the aircraft are still on the beach more than 40 years later. (credit:Suranga Weeratunga/Solent News/REX Shutterstock)
