Poll: How Will You Answer Compulsory Organ Donor Question?

Poll: How Will You Answer Compulsory Organ Donor Question?

From Monday people will have to answer questions on organ donation before they can complete a driving licence application.

A previously optional question on becoming an organ donor will now be compulsory when a licence is applied for through the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) website.

More than 8.5 million people have signed up to the NHS Organ Donor Register through an existing scheme with the DVLA, but it is now hoped that number will increase. Similar changes in the United States saw the percentage of people choosing to become donors almost double.

There are around 8,000 people currently waiting for organ donors in the UK.

Health Minister Anne Milton said:

"Being an organ donor is a truly selfless act and a life saving gift to someone in need. Only 29 per cent of people in the UK have registered to donate organs, when we know 90 per cent of people in the UK have expressed interest in donating.

"We want to make it easier for people to sign up to the Organ Donor Register when they apply for their driving licence and encourage everyone to discuss their organ donation wishes with their loved ones. The changes to the DVLA website will do just that but you don't have to wait. Anyone can sign up today by filling a form online at www.organdonation.nhs.uk or calling 0300 123 23 23."
