It was an ignominious end for the former Iraqi president, cowering in a hole in the ground, stinking, filthy and with his face covered by an unkempt beard.

He would later be found guilty of numerous charges related to the Dujail Massacre in 1982.

In those 10 years since Saddam's capture, military and security forces around the world have pursued others accused of horrific crimes.

The former president of Liberia from 1997-2003, Charles Taylor was extradited and detained in 2006.In April 2012 he was found guilty in The Hague of eleven charges including murder and the use of child soldiers in the Sierra Leone Civil War.He is held in Durham prison. (credit:Getty Images)

Dr Radovan Karadžić was the co-founder of the Serbian Democratic Party and first President of Republika Srpska from 1992 to 1996 during the Balkans conflict.He is accused of personally ordering the Srebrenica massacre.He was arrested in Belgrade in July 2008 having worked in alternative medicine for 'Human Quantum Energy' with appropriately ridiculous facial hair. Ratko Mladic was the Bosnian Serb army chief throughout the Balkans conflict.He was caught living in the Serbian countryside in 26 May 2011.He is currently on trial at the hague charged with war crimes including genocide related to the Srebrenica massacre. (credit:AP)

Often known by his alias of Z-40, Miguel Angel Trevino Morales was leader of the notorious Mexican drug cartel, Los Zetas.A life-long criminal, he gained a reputation for violence, intimidations and his favourite method of execution, stewing, which involves burning someone alive in an oil barrel doused in gasoline.He was eventually caught by Mexican marines on the 15 July this year and is accused of numerous crimes including the San Fernando massacre of 193 people in 2011. Colonel Muammar Gaddafi took power in Libya in a military coup in 1969 and ruled the country with an iron fist until 2011 when an NATO-supported uprising ousted him.After being pursued across the country for weeks, opposition fighters caught Gaddafi hiding in a drainpipe.He was beaten, sodomised and possibly shot. Laszlo Csatary was a Hungarian Nazi war-crimes suspect accused of playing a key role in the deportation of 15,700 Jews to Auschwitz.He was convicted in absentia for war crimes in 1948 but managed to flee to Montreal and lived as an art dealer until his citizenship was revoked in 1997.In 2012 he was tracked down to an address in Budapest.He died in August of this year awaiting trial.
