A photographer has captured remarkable images of the aurora borealis over Iceland, which resembles a huge phoenix rising about the icy land. Hallgrimur P. Helgason took the pictures in Kaldasel, which show what looks like a striking profile of the mythical creature.
The phenomenon occurs when particles from solar explosions collide with the Earth's magnetic field, which forces the particles up towards the magnetic North Pole where they interact with the atmosphere. The lights are more than 60 miles above the Earth's surface.
