Body parts believed to be those of a baby have been found at a popular common.

Police were called to an area of Tooting Bec Common in south London early on Monday after the discovery was reported.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "Police were called at approximately eight o'clock this morning to reports of body parts believed to be of an infant child found at a location in Dr Johnson Avenue, SW17.

"Officers from Wandsworth are at the scene and inquiries continue."

The avenue runs through the common and is around two miles from St George's Hospital in Tooting.

The Daily Telegraph reported that police sources suggested that the body parts might be those of a stillborn baby.
