The number of people who have died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus has risen to 32,692 – an increase of 627 over 24 hours.

This is the third week the government’s daily announcements have included people in care homes and the community, rather than just in hospital, who have died.

But only those who had tested positive for Covid-19 are included, meaning anyone who died with a suspected case won’t be recorded.

The figures cover the period up to 5pm on Monday.

It comes after the number of people who have died in hospitals after contracting the virus rose by 425 in 24 hours.

That increase consisted of 350 in England, 50 in Scotland, 16 in Wales and nine in Northern Ireland.

Separate figures compiled by the Office for National Statistics up to May 1, National Records of Scotland up to May 3 and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency up to May 6 show 38,355 people had died with Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.

Further deaths recorded by NHS England since May 1 suggest the UK has collectively passed the mark of 40,000 deaths, according to analysis by the Press Association on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, as of 9am on Tuesday, 1,460,517 people have been tested for coronavirus, with 226,463 coming back positive. The government again missed its 100,000 tests a day target, carrying out 85,293 and getting 3,403 positive results in 24 hours.
