Award-winning author Mark Haddon - who brought us The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime - has spoken out about tax.

Writing to his MP last February, the millionaire said: "I'm a wealthy person. Austerity measures introduced by the coalition have caused real suffering to many people, but my comfortable life hasn't changed in the slightest. Why have I, and people like me, been asked to contribute nothing?"

Since it's publication in 2003 The Curious Incident has sold over 2million copies around the world, has been made into a stage production by the National Theatre and is set to be made into a film by Brad Pitt.

"I should be paying more tax," the Oxford graduate told The Sunday Times.

Speaking to the newspaper he drew on the actions of Warren Buffett, a US billionaire who took a stand saying that he should be paying more tax. Referring to Barclay's former chief executive Bob Diamond, Haddon said: "There seem to be more Bob Diamonds than Warren Buffetts."

He added: "I'm not asking just an economic question but a moral one, too. Many people have pointed out that if everybody paid taxes properly we wouldn't have an austerity problem at all."
