It's the stuff of nightmares. You're tucking into a takeaway curry, then there's a loud crunch… it must be a cardamom seed you say, but no, fishing the offending item out of your mouth, you find it has six legs and two antenna.

One horrified diner prompted a council inspection after finding a cockroach in a chicken vindaloo takeaway from the Dalia Spice restaurant in Cromer last July.

Writing about the experience on TripAdvisor, the customer said after calling to complain "the restaurant owner quickly come around to inspect the cockroach... issued a full refund and took the ugly little beast away."

But a "large scale infestation" of cockroaches was discovered in the kitchen and restaurant, North Norfolk District Council said.

The council said inspectors found a "full life cycle of evidence", with larvae and mature cockroaches found at the restaurant on Prince of Wales Road.

The restaurant has, unsurprisingly, now been ordered to close.

Shelina Akhter, who admitted eight food hygiene offences at Norwich Magistrates' Court, had voluntarily closed the restaurant following the inspection, the BBC reported.
