An enormous dust storm sweeps across the Taklamakan Desert yesterday morning. The Taklamakan is a sea of sand in western China – north of the Himalaya Mountains and the Tibetan Plateau, which prevent moisture from reaching the area. Whirlwinds sometimes cross the sand dunes, leaving distinctive tracks that were not studied in detail until scientists noticed that they were very similar to the tracks left by whirlwinds on Mars.
