Gurning, beaming and pulling faces that are probably best kept behind closed bathroom doors, David Cameron looked to be competing in Olympic feats of his own as he cheered on Team GB from the stands.

The facially-contorted Prime Minister appeared to throw himself wholeheartedly into the spirit of the Games, perhaps hinting at a stifled sportsman within.

There had been speculation his presence at the games had stirred a malignant curse that blighted the performance of the male and female British athletes he watched.

"The curse of Cameron" was blamed for Great Britain's sluggish start to the Olympics, with some commenters darkly pointing out he had also been present when Andy Murray lost in the Wimbledon final.

However once the premier left Britain for a brief jaunt to Afghanistan, the golds started pouring in. Mercifully, upon his return, the curse appeared to have been lifted with Chris Hoy sweeping to glory, despite the presence of Cameron in the crowds.

Phew.
