Usain Bolt – what a sportsman, but also what a gentleman. The reigning Olympic champion, who won the 100m final on Sunday evening, was giving a trackside interview with a European TV crew when his countryman Sanya Richards-Ross, originally from Jamaica but now running for the US, received the gold medal for her victory in the 400m.

Rather than carry on, Bolt insisted on halting the talk and standing silently to pay respects at the ceremony while the American national anthem echoed around London’s Olympic stadium.

Earlier, Bolt had run the distance in 9.63 seconds to take gold, beating his training partner Johan "The Beast" Blake into second.

A man was arrested after the race for throwing a bottle onto the track before the start of the race.

In the press conference on Sunday night, Bolt took a swipe at the organisers of the 2012 games, complaining that athletes had been subject to "weird, silly rules".
