A television station has had to issue a grovelling apology after one of their anchors was awkwardly caught telling parents to "do their f*cking jobs" live on air.

Matt Pieper from News 12 The Bronx in New York was caught on camera insulting people who rely on government assistance "for their entire lives" - thinking the show had gone to an ad break.

Oblivious to the fact that he was still on air, Pieper began chatting to another reporter about school crossing guards in the States when he said: "Two minutes and Dave [a colleague] wants you to talk about how parents should do their f*cking jobs and take their kids to school and not rely on everyone else, kind of like people who rely on government assistance for their entire lives."

But it didn't stop there - Pieper continued to joke with reporter Amy Yensi for a *painfully* awkward amount of time as the cameras continued to roll.

Yensi added: “I think I qualify for government assistance,” to which, Pieper replied, “Just check that box, girl.”

The station later issued an apology on Facebook for the slip:

It comes after a local Anchorage reporter Charlo Greene quit her job as a newswoman in spectacular fashion to focus on legalising marijuana in Alaska.

After reporting a segment on maijuana, Greene said: “Everything you've heard is why I, the actual owner of the Alaska Cannabis Club, will be dedicating all of my energy toward fighting for freedom and fairness, which begins with legalising marijuana here in Alaska. And as for this job, well, not that I have a choice but, f*ck it, I quit."
