Elvis, an unlucky horse that became stuck in a mud pit up to its neck, has been rescued by the firefighters in the West Midlands.

The animal was "all shook up" when it was found in distress at Hillfields Farm near Coventry on July 20.

Specialist rescue crews had to act quickly to keep the animal alive, they said. A technician had to jump into the 20-metre square pit while colleagues shoveled as much mud as possible away from the horse. Straps were eventually fitted underneath the horse's stomach and around his legs, before he was able to be pulled out by a team of team.

The rescue took a total of two hours.

Watch Manger Pete Drummond who was first to arrive at the scene said: "I left the vehicle and ran the quarter-mile distance through woodland tracks to get to the horse, as we heard from the owner that he was now almost fully submerged."

"With the assistance of my crew, three potential rescue plans were put in place. The horse was clearly in distress and it was crucial that we acted quickly to get him out alive".

Elvis' owner, Maggie Hill said "I cannot praise the crews enough for what they did. I didn't think there was any chance they'd manage to pull him out alive but they did. They were absolutely brilliant, true gentlemen and I am extremely grateful to them".
