General view of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, the location of the Tenggerese villages where the Tenggerese Hindu Yadnya Kasada Festival is held on August 11, 2014 in Probolinggo, Java, Indonesia. The festival is the main festival of the Tenggerese people and lasts about a month. On the fourteenth day, the Tenggerese make the journey to Mount Bromo to make offerings of rice, fruits, vegetables, flowers and livestock to the mountain gods by throwing them into the volcano's caldera. The origin of the festival lies in the 15th century when a princess named Roro Anteng started the principality of Tengger with her husband Joko Seger, and the childless couple asked the mountain Gods for help in bearing children. The legend says the Gods granted them 24 children but on the provision that the 25th must be tossed into the volcano in sacrifice. The 25th child, Kesuma, was finally sacrificed in this way after initial refusal, and the tradition of throwing sacrifices into the caldera to appease the mountain Gods continues today. A Gambian pouched rat is being hand reared at Valencia BIOPARC . . .One of the world's largest muroids growing up to about 0.9 metres (3 feet) long. These super rodents prevent thousands of human deaths, making an important contribution to populations devastated by war. Their highly developed sense of smell enables them capable of detecting landmines. The eight weeks young Gambian pouched rat (Cricetomys gambianus) was rejected by its mother and the technical team of the park decided to raise the orphaned rodent themselves. Weighing 119 grams at birth, the rat pup currently weighs 171 grams and is being fed on four daily doses of milk from special "mini-bottles" and fruits and vegetables.Growing into his environment nicely, this intelligent creature is starting to recognize his dwellings at the outer precincts of the park in the undergrounds of the African savannah section, exploring the network of burrows created by the Aardvark - also shared by warthogs and hyenas - in this unique 10-hectare (25-acre) zoo. Located in Central Africa, from the west coast to the east and south from the northeast corner of South Africa to southern Angola. This huge rodent can accumulate large amount of seeds, fruits and leaves in their, considerably stretched, cheeks. This food is transported and stored in their den.Additional to their strong sense of smell, the Gambian pouched rat's low weight can walk over surfaces where mines have been buried without them detonating. They are, also, easily domesticated animals, making them an invaluable ally in the campaign against landmines - most especially in the African continent.
