Visitors to Woburn Safari Park were lucky enough to witness the arrival of a new baby giraffe this week, belonging to the gravely endangered Rothschild species, after mother Freya gave birth in the Road Safari reserve. Surrounded by father Casper and the rest of the Woburn giraffe herd during the quick birth, the calf was warmly welcomed into the world. Much like any family, Woburn encourages the herd, now 19 strong, to be actively involved in the youngster’s birth and upbringing.

State-owned National Oil Corp has warned of a humanitarian and environmental catastrophe after the tank containing six million litres of fuel was set ablaze by rocket fire late on July 27, 2014. The Tripoli clashes, the most violent since the overthrow of dictator Moamer Kadhafi in 2011, started with a July 13 assault on the airport by a coalition of groups, mainly Islamists.

One of the more spectacular scenes of the Aurora Borealis was photographed by one of the Expedition 40 crew members aboard the International Space Station from an altitude of approximately 223 nautical miles on 15 July 2014. The crew member used a 50mm lens to record the image as the orbital outpost was over a point south of Australia. Parts of solar array panels of the space station are visible at right.

The wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship is towed by tugboats towards Genoa's harbor, Italy, Sunday, July 27, 2014. The shipwrecked Costa Concordia cruise liner has completed its final journey. Pulled by tugboats and nudged by brisk winds, the wreck was eased Sunday into Genoa's port â where it will be scrapped. The luxury liner struck a reef when its captain sailed too close to Giglio Island off Tuscany's coast Jan. 13, 2012, and capsized, killing 32 people. A spectacular operation set the wreck upright in September 2013. On Wednesday, tugboats began the five-day journey to Genoa, headquarters of ship owner Costa Crociere Spa.
