A Perseid meteor streaks across the sky over the community of Cold Creek on August 12, 2015 in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, Nevada. The annual display, known as the Perseid shower because the meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus in the northeastern sky, is a result of Earth's orbit passing through debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle. A migrant boy poses for a photograph after getting out of an inflatable boat on a beach on the Greek island of Kos, after crossing a part of the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Greece, on August 12, 2015. The number of migrants and refugees arriving on Greece's shores has exploded this year, but the Mediterranean country provides virtually no reception facilities and leaves them wallowing in 'totally shameful' conditions, a UN official said on August 7. The UN refugee agency's division for Europe said 124,000 refugees and migrants have landed in Greece since the beginning of the year. Photographers across the UK have captured incredible pictures of the Perseid meteor shower as it reached its peak last night. For the first time since 2007 the shower has coincided with a new moon, creating perfect viewing conditions in parts of the country which were not covered in cloud. The annual meteor shower can produce between 50 and 100 shooting stars per hour and is expected to put on another dazzling display tonight (Wed). Amateur photographer Peter Greig got an amazing photo of the perseids in the early hours of this morning (Wed) at Llanddwyn Island in Anglesey, Wales. "The conditions last night were perfect for meteor hunting. The new moon and crystal clear sky gave way to an amazing display," said Peter, 33, a salesman from Hartlepool. "This is one of, if not the best location I've photographed the milky way in the UK so far. There is very little light pollution which enables the camera to pick up better details in it's structure, especially close to the horizon." (credit:Peter Greig/REX)
