This serene squirrel looks to be deep in thought as it stands on two back legs beneath one of the last flowers of the season. The bushy-tailed mammal is foraging around for food, stretching on tip-toes to reach the bright red poppies before pulling them down towards him. For a few moments the cheeky rodent holds the stem between his teeth, before munching on the tasty flower. This hungry creature is one of a family of burrowing European ground squirrels, who were photographed in a meadow in north-east Austria. The stunning images were captured by 33-year-old chemist Oliver Geiseler, who described the animals as "incredible". Oliver, from Freiburg, Germany, said: "The squirrel is grabbing after the flowers, pulling them down to himself and then eating the flower and the buds. "The animals were fast and effective, so I didn't have much time to take the photos. (credit:Oliver Geiseler/Solent News/REX Shutterstock)
