Woman Charged Over Tram Rant 'Locked Up For Own Safety' After Death Threats

Emma West, a 34-year-old mother charged with racial harrassment following a video called 'My tram experience', which appeared online, has reportedly been locked up for her own protection after receiving death threats.

A video published on YouTube showed a woman with a toddler on her knee apparently shouting abuse at ethnic minority passengers. The clip has been watched by millions, sparking outrage amongst viewers.

Frances Lockhart, prosecuting, told magistrates in Croydon, South London during a hearing on Tuesday that she opposed bail for West. She said: “There are grounds for believing that Miss West is not safe.”

David Ewings, defending, said West would be in just as much danger in prison.

But chief magistrate Gerald Ellis refused to release West. He said: “We hear a number of death threats have been made.”
