Arsenal Football Club has decided to give free tickets to its fans who sat through a humiliating 8 - 2 game at the hands, and feet, of Manchester United on Sunday.

By way of apology for making their travelling supporters endure one of the worst defeats in their team's history, the North London club has offered to cover the cost of an away game ticket for another match this season for each of the fans who travelled to Manchester.

A club statement issued on Monday said: "Sunday's result was obviously disappointing for everyone connected with the club. Our travelling fans were magnificent throughout and we want to recognise their fantastic support. We will be writing to them shortly with the details."

Arsenal now sit near the bottom of the Premier League in 17th place, just one place above the relegation zone.

While only three games have been played this season, and despite long time Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's past successes, William Hill punters have have already backed him from 5/2 to 6/4 that he will to be gone by the end of the season.

"No trophies, no major signings and now crashing to defeat to clubs with whom they are more used to being equals. Even the greatest of managers will struggle to survive in such a situation and the momentum seems to be speeding up to a level at which Arsene's future will no longer be in his own hands' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Following the defeat to Manchester United, Wenger said: "Of course you feel humiliated when you concede eight goals."
