Danny Baker has not been axed from the BBC despite his tweets claiming he has, his agent said on Friday.

He went on: "The BBC cuts are essential & I am happy to fall on their sword. I mean, how else are they to fund ads like this?

Within moments he was trending on Twitter with people claiming it was "wrong" and that the decision was "proof BBC bosses are clueless idiots."

On Thursday BBC director general Mark Thompson announced a series of cutbacks which would involve 2,000 job loses and more repeats of programmes.

But Baker's agent Alex Armitage told the Huffington Post UK that Baker liked to use his tweets to spark reaction and that neither he or Danny had been told the axe had swung.

"Who knows what the future holds. I think you might have been taken in by it," he laughed.
