Calls For Gaddafi Post-Mortem Go Unheeded

Military commanders in Misurata have refused to bow to pressure from Gaddafi's relatives who have demanded a post-mortem on the dead dictator.

The privately-owned Al-Rai television, which previously provided a platform for Gaddafi supporters, reportedly released a declaration stating the remaining survivors of Gaddafi's family want his body handed over.

"We call on the UN, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and Amnesty International to force the [National] Transitional Council to hand over the martyrs' bodies to our tribe in Sirte and to allow them to perform their burial ceremony in accordance with Islamic customs and rules", the Telegraph reported.

Libyan authorities are facing questions about Gaddafi's death after video footage emerged showing him begging for his life. Concerns have been raised over the legality of his death, with many individuals - including Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov - saying it breached Geneva Conventions.

The debate is still ongoing as to where - and how - Gaddafi should be buried, with some saying his body should be dumped at sea. The dictator's body is currently on display in a meat market, where thousands have queued to catch a glimpse and take pictures of his bloodied, battered corpse.
