What's life like in the Gaza Strip? According to the UN, pretty brutal.

On the other hand, unless you live there, it's almost impossible to find out for yourself. Even getting inside is pretty difficult. Vice founder Suroosh Alvi first tried to get into Gaza in 2007 but couldn't make it past the border.

Last year he tried again, however, and by travelling from Egypt through a border opened up during the Arab Spring managed to get an insight into the claustrophobic, violent and chaotic reality of life in Gaza.

Vice has now released the first 10-minute episode of a six-part series revealing what they found. And in true Vice style, it's as compulsive as it is shocking to watch.

In the first episode alone Vice meet a man returning to Gaza for the first time in 46 years, witness an tense street press conference by a group of militants with rifles slung around their shoulders, interview Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum ("We resist like Charles de Gaulle, George Washington and Churchill") and watch as Israeli drones buzz constantly overhead.

In future episodes Vice promises a look at the Gaza youth's harrowing new "escapist drug of choice", a visit to Gaza's overcrowded prisons and a day trip out with the Hamas military to blow up some weapons.
