Two people were killed and more than 80 injured in a huge highway pile-up in Texas involving at least 140 vehicles.

The tragedy on Thanksgiving day morning happened in thick fog on Interstate 10 near the city of Beaumont, and left vehicles piled up on top of each other, according to press reports.

A Jefferson County sheriff deputy, Rod Carroll, told The Associated Press that because of the dense fog, officers didn't know that they were dealing with multiple casualties and accidents.

"It is catastrophic, I've got cars on top of cars," he said.

Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis told KFDM-TV that two people in an SUV died after the crash, adding that uninjured drivers helped sort through the wreckages to help casualties.

"It's just people helping people," Carroll said. "The foremost thing in this holiday season is how other travelers were helping us when we were overwhelmed, sitting and holding, putting pressure on people that were injured."
