Thursday's expected verdict comes 18 months after Reeva Steenkamp was shot to death as she cowered behind a locked door and six months after the beginning of one of the most scrutinised criminal trials in recent history.

The Huffington Post UK looks back on the key points of the trial that shook South Africa and dominated headlines across the world for months.

Oscar Pistorius (pictured covering his head as he reaches for a bucket on the floor nearby) vomited in the dock early in the trial as he heard graphic details in testimony from pathologist Prof. Gert Saaymanof, of the injuries sustained by Reeva Steenkamp when he shot her on Valentine's Day, 2013. March 19 - Steenkamp was 'in the brace position when she was shot'(02 of11)

Reeva Steenkamp was in the defensive, brace position when she was shot through a locked toilet door by Pistorius, a ballistics expert tells the court. "In this instance the deceased was most probably seated in the defence position," he testifies. He adds the gunshot wound to Reeva's head caused her to fall from position, saying: "When the bullet hit her in the head, she would have dropped down, her head ending up on top of the toilet seat." The prosecutor gives an opening that shows his reputation for ferociousness is justified. Gerrie Nel, nicknamed 'The Pit Bull' for aggressive cross-examinations, tells Pistorius straight away: "You shot and killed her, you need to take responsiblity, say it, say you killed Reeva Steenkamp". Pistorius quietly replies: "I did. I have a responsibility to Reeva and myself to tell the truth." (credit:Pool via Getty Images)
April 8 - Pistorius breaks down describing the shooting(04 of11)

Pistorius breaks down and his family in court weep (his sister Aimee Pistorius, pictured right) as he describes how he came to shoot her. He insists he mistook noise from his bathroom for an intruder and shot her accidentally through the toilet door. He says he returned to bed after firing four shots, when his "ears were ringing", and he expected to find Steenkamp still there but found it empty. "It was at that point it first dawned on me that it could be Reeva inside the toilet," he says as he wells up. "I flung the (toilet) door open and saw it was Reeva and I cried." Wailing, he adds: "She wasn't breathing." (credit:ASSOCIATED PRESS)
April 9 - Gasps in court as photos of Steenkamp's bloodied head are shown(05 of11)

Shock spreads throughout the court as images of Reeva Steenkamp's bloodied head are shown without warning - even though her family are present in court. Broadcasters who had shown the trial live institute a time delay to ensure there isn't a repeat. Nel tells Pistorius his girlfriend's head "exploded like a watermelon" when she was shot. On the same day, a video of Pistorius on a firing range, shooting watermelons, becomes public. (credit:Foto24 via Getty Images)
April 14 - 'High-pitched' screams were not Reeva's(06 of11)

Witnesses claim they heard 'high-pitched, blood-curdling' screams on the night of the shooting that they believed to be Steenkamp's. But Pistorius claims it was him. "My voice was the only voice screaming that night," he tells the trial. "I was screaming for help, for Reeva, for the Lord to help me. It was desperate." (credit:ASSOCIATED PRESS)
April 15 - Steenkamp's Valentine card read out(07 of11)

In the card Steenkamp wrote to the man who killed her, she said: "Roses are red, violets are blue. I think today is a good day to tell you that... I love you." The card came with a wrapped present - three framed photos of the couple together. Pistorius claimed he could not face opening them after he shot Steenkamp to death in the early hours of the day he was meant to receive them.
April 22 - 'Acting lessons' claims(08 of11)

A South African journalist, Jani Allan, claims Pistorius received acting lessons before the trial to make his emotional reactions to the evidence seem genuine. In an open letter, she says: I have it from a reliable source that you are taking acting lessons for your days in court. Your coach has an impossible task." Pistorius denies the claim. May 20 - Psychiatric test ordered(09 of11)

Pistorius is ordered to go on a one-month psychiatric assessment, after his defence says he may suffer from Generalised Anxiety Disorder, which makes people hypersensitive and would back up his version of events - that he sprang into action and shot Steenkamp after hearing a noise in his bathroom. The assessment concludes he does not suffer the disorder and the trial resumes on June 30. It's not all bad news for the defence - psychologists find Pistorius lacks the "narcissistic" qualities typical of abusive partners, nor any "no abnormal aggression or explosive violence". July 6 - Footage of Pistorius re-enacting the shooting leaks(10 of11)

Extraordinary footage is leaked showing Pistorius re-enacting the shooting of Steenkamp and illustrating how he moves without his prosthetic legs. The part of Reeva is played by Pistorius' sister Aimee. It was only intended to be preparation for the trial. The family's lawyer said the footage had been "obtained illegally" and was never meant for broadcast. (credit:Channel 7)
July 7 - 'I have forgiven Oscar'(11 of11)

June Steenkamp, mother of the late Reeva, claims she has "forgiven" Pistorius for killing her daughter, whose "presence" she feels every day. "I feel her presence and talk to her all the time. She'll only rest in peace when this is over," she says. "I trust that God will prevail and justice will be done. All we want is the truth. I don't hate Oscar. I've forgiven him. I have to - that's my religion. But I am determined to face him and re-claim my daughter. It's important for him to know that I'm there, that Reeva's mother who gave birth to her and loved her, is there for her." (credit:ASSOCIATED PRESS)
