Sheep rained down onto a motorway in Melbourne after a truck carrying 400 of the woolly beasts toppled on a flyover.

Drivers were left agog as the downy cargo fell onto passing vehicles below, with several cars careering off the road.

Fortunately, police reported no human casualties. Many of the sheep were not so lucky.

The lorry, which was travelling to Geelong, slammed into the wall of the Princess Freeway, though the cause of the accident remains unknown.

Speaking to the Associated Press, paramedic Allan Eade, said: "This is quite an unusual event. First of all we looked up and we could see the truck flip on its side and the next minute we were underneath and well yeah it rained sheep."
