The UK has recorded 1,052 more Covid-related deaths since Monday.

Tuesday’s figure brings the total number of fatalities to 113,850 since the pandemic began. That refers to people who have died within 28 days of first testing positive for coronavirus.

The rolling seven-day death toll is 5,837 – a drop of more than 25% week-on-week.

The number of new daily cases has also dropped to its lowest since December 8 – with 12,364 recorded in the previous 24 hours. On a week-by-week basis, cases are down 26%.

Another 352,480 people in the UK have received their first vaccine jab in the last 24 hours – and 3,811 had their second dose. That takes the total number of people to have had at least one dose of the vaccine to 12,646,486.

Earlier on Tuesday Matt Hancock announced tough new measures for people travelling to the UK from 33 “red list” Covid hotspot countries.

Anyone caught lying on their passenger locator form could face up to 10 years in prison, while those who fail to quarantine in a hotel could be hit with a £10,000 fine.

The health secretary also confirmed people isolating will have to get a Covid-19 test two and eight days into their 10-day quarantine period.
