A "horrified" gay couple have complained after a road in Kent was named Bangays Way which they claim is homophobic.

Despite being in memory of local historian Frank Bangay, the pair have enlisted the support of their local MP, Tom Tugendhat.

They told the Telegraph: "My husband and I went to look round the new development. Having got over the initial humour, we reflected that this street name was actually pretty offensive.

"Somehow seeing it on the sign made it look even worse. We are pretty sure the sign will be subject to frequent vandalism and possible theft.

"Apparently Frank Bangay was a local historian. Many local roads are named after local families. But only in one instance did an 's' get tacked on the end."

The couple - who do not wish to be named and have lived in the area for seven years - wrote to Borough Green Parish Council who dismissed their claim.

It was then that they contacted Tugendhat who said: "His complaint is not without merit, so I am perfectly happy to support him."

Frank Bangay died in 1999 and his family are said to be upset at the complaint.
