London's Canary Wharf business district was put on lockdown following reports of a suspicious package Thursday morning.

Met Police officers were called to London's financial district at 9am after it was alleged a package was found in Churchill Place, beside the skyscraper housing Barclays Bank HQ.

Witnesses described being told to stay in nearby buildings amid reports of a controlled explosion taking place.

Officers confirmed they sent a bomb disposal squad to investigate the package just after 9am - but it turned out to be a false alarm.
