A British woman has died on a beach in Antigua just hours after she arrived on holiday, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

Nicola Raybone, 33, from St Annes, Lancashire, had flown out to the Caribbean island last Thursday, reportedly to celebrate her father's wedding.

It is thought that she landed on the island on a British Airways flight at about 4pm before transferring to the Jolly Beach Resort.

Her family last saw her three hours later but then raised the alarm when she could not be located and her body was discovered on the shoreline at the hotel about a hour afterwards.

Posting an online tribute to mother-of-two Ms Raybone, her uncle Dave Barlow said: "Nicola was the most pleasant girl I've ever met.

"Never once have I heard her raise her voice to anyone. She loved her kids unconditionally and she received the same back from them."

One who lived near to Raybone told the Blackpool Gazette that when she first heard of the death she "thought it was some kind of joke".

“I didn’t know her too well, but my children know her children and it was clear they absolutely worshipped her. I can’t believe this has happened to her," she said.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Antigua on January 19.

"We are in touch with the Antiguan authorities and providing consular assistance."
