Robert Black, the Scottish serial killer who is serving 10 life sentences for the murders of three schoolgirls, has been found guilty of killing a fourth, nine-year-old Jennifer Cardy.

The jury trying Black at Armagh Crown Court announced their verdict on Thursday, after hearing how Cardy had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted before her death in August 1981.

Cardy, from Northern Ireland, was kidnapped 30 years ago as she rode her bicycle to a friend's house. The schoolgirl's red bike was discovered in a field beside a hedge, close to the village of Ballinderry. Two fishermen discovered her body six days later. It was floating in a dam 10 miles from where she had last been seen.

Black's previous convictions were revealed to the court on 10 October and were used as evidence against the serial killer.

The 64-year-old was convicted in 1994 for the murder of Susan Maxwell, 11, Sarah Harper, 10, and five-year-old Caroline Hogg. The van driver was finally caught in 1990 when he was arrested near Stow. Police found a six-year-old girl in the back of his van. She was gagged and bound with a sleeping bag over her head.

Black has yet to receive a sentence for Cardy's murder.
