World Cup 2014: Monorail Collapses In Brazil, Killing One, Just Days Before Kick Off

Monorail Collapses In Brazil, Killing One, Just Days Before World Cup Kick Off
|

Part of a monorail has collapsed in Brazil's biggest city just days before the start of the World Cup, killing a construction worker.

The worker was hit by a huge concrete slab in Sao Paulo after a section of the development collapsed.

The authorities at the scene said at least two others had been injured, the BBC reported.

The 11 mile monorail was originally meant to be completed for the World Cup kick off on Thursday, but it is behind schedule.

Brazil's preparations for the World Cup have been marred by accidents and missed deadlines along with strikes and protests.

Eight workers have already died in accidents during the building of the country's 12 World Cup arenas.

Last November, two workers were killed when a crane fell into a corner of the Corinthians Arena, which will host the first World Cupgame between Brazil and Croatia.

In a separate incident a worker fell 26 feet to his death at the Sao Paulo stadium.

The partial strike on the city's metro was set to continue for at least a sixth day after local authorities left a meeting with union leaders Monday evening without an agreement.

But the metro union announced Tuesday it has decided to suspend the subway workers' strike until Wednesday.

The union is due to meet again on Wednesday to decide whether the strike - which has caused huge delays in Brazil's biggest city - would continue.
