Thousands of people gathered to watch the explosive demolition of two iconic chimney stacks at the former Cockenzie power station on Saturday.

Local resident David McCulloch won a raffle to press the button to set off the controlled explosion which saw the 149-foot chimneys gracefully topple together, according to the BBC.

A huge number of locals viewed the demolition, with many people also taking to the waters of the Firth of Forth to get a better look.

The power station was decommissioned in March 2013 after half a century of service to the surrounding East Lothian area.

The station’s boiler house will be pulled down at a later date.

Some locals posted their farewells to the chimneys on Twitter…
