Ivanka Trump Inserted Herself Into A Conversation With World Leaders. It's Hard To Watch

"Being someone’s daughter actually isn’t a career qualification."

Ivanka Trump has faced mockery and criticism after a video emerged of the US president’s daughter attempting to join a conversation between four world leaders.

Attending the G-20 summit in Japan, the ‘senior adviser’ to her father is seen mixing with French president Emmanuel Macron, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, International Monetary Fund director Christine Lagarde and British prime minister Theresa May as they talk.

The video, released by the the French government on Saturday, was shared by BBC journalist Parham Ghobadi, who described the ‘first daughter’ as trying to “get involved” in the conversation.

During the conversation, Macron appeared to be making a point about social justice, and May replied that people notice when the economy is brought into it.  Trump appears to follow-up with a point about how the defence industry is male-dominated.

Some of the faces of the world leaders tell their own story, with Lagarde perhaps the most revealing - appearing to roll her eyes at one point.

New York Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that the situation hurts the US diplomatic standing in the world.

She wrote: “It may be shocking to some, but being someone’s daughter actually isn’t a career qualification.

“The US needs our president working the G20. Bringing a qualified diplomat couldn’t hurt either.”

Once the clip had gone viral, Piers Morgan naturally weighed in - suggesting being the daughter of the president made her more qualified than a former bar-tender, as Ocasio-Cortez was. The congresswoman fired back.

After the G20, during which Trump and her husband Jared Kushner attended talks with China about trade, the entourage continued to South Korea ahead of her father’s historic visit to the Demilitarised Zone and into North Korean territory.
