A driver will appear in court today charged with causing the death of a six-year-old boy in an alleged hit-and-run incident.

Peter Renshaw, 22, of Grange Drive, Emley, Huddersfield, is facing charges in connection with the death of Owen Wightman.

Owen was struck by a car while out playing with a friend close to his home in Wakefield on 18 June, last year.

Renshaw is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident.

The causing death by dangerous driving charge alleges Renshaw was driving a Fiat Seicento dangerously on Fishpond Lane, Kettlethorpe, Wakefield, when Owen died.

Renshaw, who is on bail, is due to appear at Leeds Crown Court where he is expected to enter a plea.
