Crowds used to flock to Britain's seaside towns, with the likes of Blackpool and Great Yarmouth seen as the most fashionable place for a break on the beach.

But their demise has been brutal, with the rise of cheap foreign travel drawing visitors away.

Now a report has claimed the resorts are being used as 'dumping grounds' for welfare claimants and other vulnerable people, with some of the worst deprivation in the country.

The first mass tourism resort, Blackpool thrived in the first part of the last century, with factory workers flocking to the seaside for their holidays.Now it has some of the UK's poorest neighbourhoods, with the highest rate of children in care in England.

This Essex town was a tourist hotspot until the 1970s, when the impact of cheap foreign travel hit it hard.in 2011, one of its suburbs was named the most deprived area in England.

'You can keep the Costa Brava', sang Chas & Dave as they extolled the virtues of the Kent seaside town.It is now among the most deprived parts of Britain, although recent years have seen a major regeneration drive.

A seaside resort since the 18th century, Great Yarmouth was once a major fishing port. Now it has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in England and Wales.
